Main Aims ~ Community Regeneration Projects

NGAG was formed in 1997 to bring about the regeneration of the historic, but by then dilapidated, Newington Green London N16 9PX, through local community effort. NGAG helped to restore the Green to popular use as a natural focus for the area and it is once again being used like a village green, even though it lies within a very urban, Inner London location.

Whilst the basic physical regeneration of the area was completed at the end of 2005, NGAG now works to ensure that the improvements are maintained, whilst encouraging new developments that benefit the whole community. NGAG committee monitors planning applications and organises local events such as planting days, Jazz on the Green, fairs and Carols on the Green.

Publications

NGAG's award winning book 'The Village That Changed The World. A History of Newington Green London N16' by Alex Allardyce was published in 2008; 2nd edit 2010.

A series of four Postcards of Newington Green and Christmas cards have also been published.

Mary on the Green project

NGAG aims to erect a memorial to Mary Wollstonecraft which we hope will put Newington Green on the map. In 2011 a second website dedicated to this project was launched: http://www.maryonthegreen.org

National Awards

The Newington Green Action Group has continually won the Green Flag Award since 2006/7 for the Green. The group has also won the prestigious Green Heritage Site Award each year since 2007.

In 2008 NGAG was awarded a Breathing Places Grant from the Big Lottery Fund, which was boosted by awards in 2009 from o2 and the Forestry Commission that resulted in the planting of 30 native street trees and the creation of wildlife habitats around the Newington Green area, as part of the WING project.

The RHS London in Bloom Awards scheme gave the Newington Green Action Group a Merit Neighbourhood Award in 2009 and a High Silver Gilt Urban Communities Award in 2010.
