So Many Wood Chips!

 The Wood Chip Pile.

Roger Simmons was one of the NGAG volunteers that helped our Community Ranger Fiona Mackenzie to spread these chippings, from a felled cherry tree, along the paths on Newington Green.

Repairing the Wood Chip Paths

The First Path is Completed

NGAG volunteers and our Community Ranger Fiona Mackenzie took an afternoon spreading a large amount of wood chips over the paths in the flower borders on Newington Green. It was hot, hard work but really good to do as the paths had lost virtually all the chips that had been put down a couple of years back. The photo shows the first path to be done and another path was completed after a welcome cup of tea.

Giving Away the Trees

Jenny Littlewood, the Chair of Newington Green Action Group, helps out at the WING Tree Giveaway.

Thanks to the generosity of the Woodland Trust, we were able to give out 420 native tree saplings to local people and community groups, so that they can be planted around the Newington Green area to enhance the wildlife corridors we have been developing.

Nestbox Making

Our LBI Community Rangers Fiona and Lee are seen helping children to make some wooden nesting boxes. The completed boxes were taken home, so that the children could put them up in a garden or on their balcony.

This activity ran alongside WING's Tree Giveaway event, in which we gave out 320 native tree saplings, that had been kindly donated to us by the Woodland Trust, in order to extend the green wildlife corridors that we have been developing locally.

Feed the Birds

Our Community Ranger, Fiona Mackenzie-Cardy, ran a 'Feed the Birds' session on Newington Green in February 2010 and this will be repeated in February 2011. Fiona brought all the materials along and showed children how to make attractive bird-friendly feeders out of natural materials.

This native tree on Green Lanes, was planted by NGAG as part of our Wildlife in Newington Green, WING project in 2009. You might ask 'Why did it need protecting?'

With time, these plants will grow and others will be added to them to fill out the tree pit. If you would like to donate some suitable plants for our local tree pits, and perhaps also help to plant them, that would be much appreciated - do use the contact form to let us know.
