Newington Green's Big Garden Birdwatch
Newington Green Area BGBW 2009
NGAG took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2009, an annual event which is run by the RSPB. We recorded the birds on Newington Green and in six other gardens around the Newington Green area.
This information was sent on to the RSPB and has also provided us with some information for our Wildlife in Newington Green,WING project. During the year we have also been recording the birds species on Newington Green itself but the thing which is particularly interesting about collecting information from other green spaces as well, is that we can compare the data collected from the Green with that from local gardens.
The BGBW 2009 results showed that the Green had a somewhat different range of birds using it, with fewer small birds being recorded there than in nearby gardens. You can see our records in the attached file. There may be several reasons for this but we would like to see whether the new planting, erection of nesting boxes and other changes that have been made on the Green make any impact on the types and numbers of birds and other species using the Green as a habitat.
Future Recordings
We would like to continue and expand our regular records and the BGBW recordings, so that we can get annual records which will give us a longer-term view of the situation. If you are interested in joining in with this project, do contact us.
