Postcard ~ Newington Green in Summer

The China Inland Mission ~ Summer

The Newington Green Action Group commissioned Jan Bowman to design a set of postcards to depict the four seasons on Newington Green and give some information about the history of the buildings depicted.

The Summer card shows the West side of Newington Green which includes the historic Grade 2 Listed Chinese Inland Mission building, now part of the Shaftesbury Student Housing complex which won a RIBA Award.

Each card gives some information on the reverse side, about Newington Green's buildings and the influential people that have lived here:

'The China Inland Mission at 44-45 Newington Green, built by James Husdson Taylor in 1872., trained Christian missionaries'...

"Samuel Rogers, a celebrated poet and art collector, was born at 52 Newington Green in 1763, later moving to number 56. His best-known poem 'The Pleasures of memory', make many references to his childhood in this area".....
