Mary Wollstonecraft

Mary Wollstonecraft ~ 1759 - 1797

The author, philosopher, teacher, war correspondent and early feminist, who ran a girls' school at Newington Green, London N16, was one of the radical thinkers amongst the Dissenters' congregation at the Unitarian Church on the Green. Mary Wollstonecraft married the political philosopher William Godwin (1756 - 1836), who was a leader of the Jacobin movement and their daughter was Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the author of 'Frankenstein'.

Wollstonecraft's most famous and influential book was ' A Vindication of the Rights of Women' (1792) and this book, in particular, has earned her the title 'the mother of feminism'.

Memorial to Mary on the Green

There is as far as we are aware, no significant memorial to Mary Wollstonecraft and the Newington Green Action Group would like to be able to erect a sculpture to Wollstonecraft on Newington Green. This exciting project is in its infancy and we need people to help make the sculpture a reality. This will not only act as a memorial to Mary Wollstonecraft but we hope it will also bring a new focus to the Newington Green area that may attract visitors and help create jobs.

UPDATE

Mary on the Green Website

On March 8 2011, the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, NGAG officially launched a new website dedicated to Mary on the Green, where you will be able to keep up to date with the project. You may visit it here: http://www.maryonthegreen.org

Help put Mary on the Green!

Anthony Gormley wrote in the Guardian (07-08-10) about erecting sculptures in Austria and describes the consultation process that took place with 'informed people in a close community, proud of its past' .. and says this process was 'proof that art can be made and achieved collectively'....

This is encouraging, as we would like local people to get involved with the planning process so that the community can be part of bringing this project into fruition. If you would like to help us put Mary on the Green, do please contact NGAG.
