When volunteers had completed the life-sized whale, its belly began to fill with plastic bags remarkably quickly, as people pledged to stop using them and to use other more environmentally friendly bags for their shopping.

Hundreds of 'I Love Plastic Bag Free Newington Green' cotton bags were given out to the local community. These were funded by Islington Council.
