Bulb Planting Event ~ ~ ~ 20 September '09
Come and Join in NGAG's Bulb Planting Event on Newington Green
The Newington Green Action Group, NGAG, will be planting hundreds of Spring and Autumn flowering bulbs on Newington Green and we will need lots of volunteers to come along and help us and be part of NGAG's Wildlife in Newington Green, WING project.
You don't have a garden but would like to get back in touch with nature? You would like to help biodiversity and wildlife? You would like to make Newington Green a more colourful and prettier place to take the children to? Here's your chance !
Do One Thing for Nature ~ help us plant some beautiful Spring and Autumn flowers, that will enhance Newington Green. You can also help us water them in to give them a good start. These mainly native flowers will extend the season and help support bees and other beneficial insects when there are few flowers around for them to feed on.
Bring some garden tools if you have some as we only have a few available ~ gloves, trowel, garden fork and/or bulb planter, watering can - all will be helpful. (You may wish to put your name / initials on your own equipment.)
Bring your family and friends ~ come and join in. You will also be able to meet other local people who want to make Newington Green even nicer for local residents.
The bulbs are mainly native varieties and will include:
- Native bluebells ~ (Hyacinthoides non-scripta)
- Wood anemones ~ (Anemone Nemorosa)
- Tenby daffodils ~ (Narcissus Obvallaris)
- Autumn crocus corms ~ (Crocus Speciosus)
- Snowdrops ~ (Galanthus Nivalis)
Volunteers Wanted to create Autumn and Spring displays on Newington Green
After the bulb planting, come and collect a free wildlife box or feeder to put up in your garden or on your balcony, to help birds, bees, ladybirds and other beneficial insects to survive the cold of winter.
FREE EVENT ~ but donations to NGAG are always welcome.
The bulbs are provided by Greenspace and NGAG.
Star Box will be open for hot drinks and snacks
Open House Weekend
You can also visit the lovely 300 year old Newington Green Unitarian Church, which has played such an important part in the history of Newington Green. It will be open to the public as part of Open House Weekend.
