The Snooty Fox, one of our local public houses and a member of the Newington Green Traders Association, ran a fundraising evening for Mary on the Green on 26 November.
Altogether, they raised a fantastic £506 which has been donated towards our Mary on the Green project to erect a memorial sculpture to Mary Wollstonecraft on Newington Green.
There was a special Mary Bar for the evening, the proceeds of which came to £320. This was made possible because wines and beers were kindly donated by some of Snooty Fox's suppliers: Redemption Brewing Company; St Austell Brewery; Windsor & Eton Brewery and Majestic Wines.
Customers donated £136 and The Snooty Fox also donated £50 to Mary on the Green.
There was a whole evening of back-to-back female DJ sessions whilst everyone enjoyed some great wines and real ales!

Our projection of Mary Wollstonecraft onto the Houses of Parliament even reached the BBC News 'Day in Pictures' on the internet. Our Mary on the Green campaign was not mentioned by name but the fact that we wish to erect a sculpture 'in honour of her contribution to equality and human rights' was stated.

Mary on the Green has received a lot of good publicity lately!
The latest article is in Jane Martinson's Women's Blog which shows an image of Mary Wollstonecraft which we had projected onto the Houses of Parliament on 16 November 2011. Jane Martinson discusses the fact that there are so few sculptures to women and she calls NGAG's Mary on the Green project, a 'campaign to honour one of our most radical and important writers' .
Martinson says she hopes 'the not insignificant sum can be raised by Mary on the Green' for the sculpture - as indeed do we - can you help?
Bee Rowlatt has been busy supporting NGAG's Mary on the Green campaign again and has written a great article in The Times about Mary Wollstonecraft. Rowlatt describes Wollstonecraft's action-filled life as a campaigning single mother in the1700s and says
'Mary Wollstonecraft was a trailblazing troublemaker'
Mary Wollstonecraft was a social reformer and educationist who worked very hard to change the world. She was a powerful and fascinating woman that we wish to commemorate with a sculpture to her on Newington Green where she lived, taught, worshipped and debated social and political issues, with influential people such as Dr Richard Price who also lived and worked here.

The newly refurbished Mayville Community Centre has picked up the Best Public Building 3R (Refurb, Rethink, Retrofit) Award 2011.
Designed by local architect and NGAG member, Justin Bere, the Centre is built to Passivhaus Standards and is an exciting new building that will be available for the local community to use for activities, events, meetings and functions.
Be one of the first people to visit the Centre
Come along to NGAG's Friends' Evening on 22 November and you can see around the Mayville Centre then.
Or you can visit the Centre if you attend the Wildlife Gardening Forum Conference on 23 November.

NGAG would like to thank all those people who voted for our Mary on the Green project in the recent NatWest CommunityForce award competition.
Our Mary on the Green project received the most votes in our section of North London, so there will soon be a very welcome £6,275 addition to our fundraising towards a memorial scultpure for Mary Wollstonecraft on Newington Green.
This is very good news, particularly in this difficult financial climate. The fact that so many people in the local community voted for Mary on the Green not only means that we have received this award but will hopefully make it easier to apply for further funding and donations in the future.
So once again, a very big 'Thank You' to all who voted for Mary on the Green!
Watch out for Mary Wollstonecraft lighting up the Speaker's House, the Royal Palace of Westminster, 4.0 - 6.0pm, on Wednesday 16 November.

This is the title of Bee Rowlatt's fascinating article about Mary Wollstonecraft's journey to Norway, which was recently published in the Travel section of the Telegraph. Do read the article as it gives a wider understanding of Mary Wollstonecraft's abilities and of her extraordinary life that expanded well beyond the books that she is famous for. She was one of the first women to be a travel writer and war correspondent, she was anti-slavery, an author, educationist and single mother - in the 1700s when such things were almost unknown!
It was Mary Wollstoncraft's wide range of skills and her impact on society both in her time and now, that we would like to acknowledge with a memorial to her, here on Newington Green, a place that was so important to her and influenced her ideas, thoughts and actions.
A great bonus is that Bee Rowlattt has generously donated the fee from this article to NGAG's Mary on The Green project.

An article by Jessie Hewitson in the Bricks and Mortar section of the Times, praises the Newington Green Action Group for transforming Newington Green from the 'neglected land inhabited by drug users, to the manicured garden square it is today'.
Jessie Hewitson goes on to say that in 2005, Newington Green was an area that many people would not choose to buy houses in because it was so run down but now, many young professionals are moving into the area. She also mentions a number of the excellent shops and restaurants around Newington Green.
Although the initial regeneration of the Green has been completed, NGAG's executive committee continue to work hard at caring for the environment and the area around Newington Green, fundraising to erect a sculpture to Mary Wollstonecraft on the Green, plus putting on events for the local community, such as our annual Jazz on the Green and upcoming Carols by the Green.
So a big 'thank you' to Jessie Hewitson as it is good to have NGAG's work publicly acknowledged in this way - articles such as this can boost our morale!

The Newington Green Action Group is pleased to announce that is has once again been awarded a grant of £2,120 from the Cripplegate Foundation. We are grateful for this grant, which goes towards NGAG's running costs and the social events that we put on for the local community, such as our Friends Evening and Jazz on the Green.

The Newington Green Action Group is pleased to announce that is has once again been awarded a grant of £2,120 from the Cripplegate Foundation. We are grateful for this grant, which goes towards NGAG's running costs and the social events that we put on for the local community, such as our Friends Evening and Jazz on the Green.
The Cripplegate Foundation is an ancient local charity that has been helping people in the Islington area since 1500. The Foundation originated from donations made to the Church of St Giles Without Cripplegate, which still stands within the Barbican.
The main aims of the Cripplegate Foundation are to address poverty, develop social cohesion and increase access to opportunities.

]]>The week commencing 1 December, Newington Green is all about Christmas Cheer!
For the first week of December, traders around Newington Green will be celebrating the festive season by keeping things local and providing discounts and offers. Newington Green Traders Association, with the help of Newington Green Action Group, have come together in a bid to pull some of the shoppers out of central London this Christmas period and back to our independent shops, pubs and local amenities that are so important to the local economy.
If you think about how to do your Xmas shopping without trawling the Oxford St crowds or spending your money online at the big super brands.... well you can head down to Newington Green and surrounding areas and make a day of it.
In the streets around the Green you'll find an array of shops from vintage to kids to bikes to florists, a broad selection of delis, bakeries and specialist food shops; plus some outstanding cafes restaurants and gastro pubs.
There will be gifts to be bought, meals to be eaten and, most importantly, special offers to be taken advantage of in the shopping calendar's most expensive month of the year.
On top of that, organised by Newington Green Action Group, on 6th December there will be Carols by the Green from 5pm. Everyone is invited to this family event and encouraged to watch/sing as they wish. Bring lanterns, hot toddies, cold toddlers (wrapped up of course), a woolly hat and your trusty umbrella.
And
Santa Claus will be appearing every Sunday during December at Three Potato Four!

We're in the news!
'Newington Green Action Group to honour feminist Mary Wollstonecraft'.
The Islington Tribune has included an article about NGAG's project to raise enough money to put a memorial sculpture to Mary Wollstonecraft on Newington Green. You can see a photo of Alex Allardyce, the Chair of the Mary on the Green working party and author of our award winning local history book 'The Village that Changed the World, A History of Newington Green N16' standing in front of the Unitarian Church where Mary Wollstonecraft used to go to hear the sermons of Dr Richard Price. Alex is accompanied by Roberta Wedge, the Mary Wollstonecraft blogger who is also a member of the Mary on the Green working party.
The article also promoted NGAG's bid to be awarded a £6,000 grant from NatWest's Community Force programme, which would go towards our Mary on the Green project, if we were given it. This grant is dependent on our gaining enough votes from the public's community action.
At the time of writing this, the Mary on the Green bid has gained 136 votes and we probably need rather more than that to win. So if you would like to support us, do please vote and ask your friends to vote too. It's an easy and free way for you to help us, in this difficult financial climate.

Just vote for Mary on the Green at NatWest COMMUNITYFORCE which donates money to those charities and their projects that have been voted for by the community.
We could be donated £6,000 by NatWest which would go towards our Mary on the Green project - if enough people vote for us.
